Fixing problems with an older smart home in Dubai
The faults that build up in an older smart home in Dubai, the upkeep it needs, and which of our guides helps you fix yours.
Most faults in an older smart home in Dubai come from a few causes: worn parts, lost connections and software that no longer gets updates. A technician can often fix them without replacing the whole system.
This page explains what tends to go wrong and what upkeep an older system needs. It also points you to the right guide for your problem.
By "older" we mean a system that has been in your home for several years. Often the installer who fitted it is no longer around.
Faults that build up over time
These are the problems we see described most often with older systems.
Our list of common problems with older smart home systems explains each one and how a technician usually fixes it.
- Switches or lights stop answering the app or the wall panel.
- AC controls ignore the temperature or schedule you set.
- Devices drop offline because the hub, the small box that links your devices, has lost its connection.
- The app or online service stops working because the maker has ended support. Signify stopped software updates for the first Philips Hue Bridge on 30 April 2020. In April 2022, Insteon's online servers stopped working.
- Parts in hot cupboards and wall panels wear out sooner. Power supplies often rely on small parts called electrolytic capacitors. TDK, a maker of these parts, says a 10 °C rise in operating temperature halves their life.
Find the guide for your problem
Start with the part of your home that is not working. Each guide begins with checks you can do yourself, then explains when to call a technician.

What upkeep an older system needs
An older system needs regular checks, not only repairs when something breaks. A technician checks the hub, installs software updates where the maker still offers them, and looks at panels and wiring for wear.
Ask about heat too. If your hub sits in a warm cupboard, a technician can check whether it has enough air around it.
How often you need a visit depends on the size and age of your system. We have not yet found a reliable figure for Dubai homes, so we do not give one.
Our guide to keeping an older smart home system running lists the checks in order.
When to ask a company for help
If a restart and the checks in our guides do not fix the fault, call a technician. This matters most when the fault is in the wiring, or when nobody knows how your system was set up.
